Free Online Weekly SFF Magazine
Posted on July 30th, 2007
Strange Horizons is an online magazine that publishes original SFF short stories every week, as well as reviews, poetry, art, and regular contributor columns. Not only is the fiction good, but they have some pretty knowledgeable folks discussing the field of “speculative fiction” itself in the columns.
The best part is that they pay for submissions, but are discriminating in their choice of material. For example, the list of what they don’t want to see is much longer than what they do want to see. That policy eliminates the tired, overused story lines and keeps the content fresh.
Add to the above that the archives go all the way back to September 2000, and you have a vein of great content you can mine for years to come. Happy digging.

Check Out Steampunk Magazine Now! Free!
Posted on June 21st, 2007
I love the genre of steampunk. The fiction ranges from brightly optimistic to darkly melancholic, but it all portrays a technological past that never was. Reflective of the fiction, steampunk projects are handcrafted of shiny brass, dark iron, rivets, mysterious dials, tubes, cogs, and unidentified widgets; they are retrofuturistic kinetic sculptures that look as good as they perform.
Steampunk Magazine takes the fiction, the projects, the fashion, the detailed illustrations, and anything else related to the genre and wraps it all together in a smart, sharp-looking package. Just as important, the magazine has attitude, and it takes pains to rock the punk side of steampunk.
So check out Steampunk Magazine. You can find FREE copies available for download online, or subscribe to the print version for nearly nothing. You can also find it in a handful of bookstores listed on the site, one of which is Red Emmas in Baltimore. I coincidentally ran into one of the collective members that help run Red Emmas the other day, so maybe I’ll swing buy and pick up a print copy too.
