Review: “Gun for Hire” by Mack Reynolds (1960)
Posted on January 13th, 2008
I gave this a read because I saw it was also illustrated by H. R. van Dongen, although unfortunately there is only one such illustration.
Gun for Hire is a decent short story that propels a mob hitman from 1960 to a too-peaceful 2133 A.D. to pull a hit. The main character, Joe Prantera, talks straight out of a 1940s wiseguy flick and initially comes across like a dumb ox. I don’t know if that impression ever changes much, but Prantera knows which way the wind blows and his plans are different from those of the over-educated do-gooders that brought him in to pull the job.
Not bad and very short, so try it out. You can find it in a couple formats at Project Gutenberg and some more at Manybooks.net
